Planting Potatoes

To obtain a good potato harvest, it is essential to use certified tuber varieties. Crop rotation is essential to prevent disease and improve soil quality. We recommend a four-year rotation, avoiding planting potatoes in soil where other solanaceous plants, such as tomatoes and eggplants, have been grown. An ideal rotation could include the following crops: potatoes, legumes, brassicas, and other vegetables.

The tubers should be planted in 10 cm deep furrows, either whole or cut in half if they are quite large, in late winter or early spring. In southern Italy, planting can be started early until mid-winter.

Planting Distances

Planting distances vary depending on the variety:

  • Early varieties: Space rows 60-70 cm apart and space them 30 cm apart.
  • Late varieties: Space rows 70-80 cm apart and space them 40 cm apart.

Soil Conditions

Potatoes thrive in loose, cool, deep soil that's well-fertilized. When the sprouts reach a height of 5-10 cm, it is important to:

  • Remove weeds.
  • Earth up the soil to a height of 30-35 cm to prevent the tubers from turning green.

Harvesting Potatoes

Once fully ripe, when the stems and leaves begin to turn yellow, you can harvest. In case of infestations, specific low-toxicity insecticides can be used.

Seed Requirements and Production

For an area of 100 m2, approximately 20-25 kg of tubers are required. Under optimal conditions, potato harvesting takes place from May to September, with a yield that can vary from 300 to 400 kg per 100 m2.
