Botanical Characteristics of Tulip Bulbs

Tulips (genus Tulipa) belong to the Liliaceae family and are native to Central Asia and the Middle East. The bulbs are rounded underground storage organs, protected by papery skins. Each bulb is composed of a vegetative apex that, once buried, generates linear leaves and a flowering stem that ends in a single flower (in botanical varieties) or multiple flowers (in ornamental cultivars).

Bulb size: varies from 8 to 14 cm in circumference depending on the variety, and the size directly affects the quality of flowering.

Dormancy period: summer.

Planting period: autumn (from September to December, depending on the climate zone).

Planting period Flowering: Spring, March to May.

Growing Tulip Bulbs: A Technical Guide

When to Plant Tulip Bulbs

The ideal time for planting is autumn, when the soil begins to cool (temperature between 10° and 14°C).

How to Plant Bulbs

  • Depth: Plant the bulbs at a depth equal to 2–3 times their height (usually between 8 and 10).
  • Spacing: Leave 10–15 cm between bulbs.
  • Location: Full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Well-drained, light, enriched with sand and mature compost. Avoid waterlogging.

Watering

Water immediately after planting. Afterward, keep the soil slightly moist until the beginning of summer dormancy, avoiding excess.

Fertilizer

Use an organic fertilizer or a slow-release fertilizer rich in potassium when planting and during the pre-flowering phase.

Storing Bulbs After Flowering

Once flowering is complete, allow the leaves to yellow naturally to allow the bulb to accumulate nutrients. Subsequently, the bulbs can be:

  • Left in place (in temperate climates).
  • Removed, cleaned, and stored in a cool, dry place (in humid climates or heavy soil).
