Botanical description

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) is a perennial, evergreen, tufted herbaceous plant belonging to the Gramineae family. It has long, erect stems and linear, narrow, glaucous-green, strongly aromatic leaves. At maturity, it can reach 1–1.5 meters in height.

Particularly prized for its intense citrus aroma, lemongrass is a multifunctional plant: a natural mosquito repellent, aromatic for culinary use, and raw material for essential extracts used in perfumery, cosmetics, and phytotherapy.

Cultivation and care

• Exposure: It loves full sun; it also tolerates partial shade well, but with more limited growth.
• Soil: It prefers loose, fertile, and well-drained soil. Avoid clayey and compact substrates.
• Watering: Requires regular watering in summer, avoiding waterlogging. Moderate watering in winter.
• Fertilization: Fertilize in spring with organic or slow-release products.
• Hardy: It tolerates minimum temperatures around +5°C, but in cold areas it should be grown in a pot and protected in winter or brought indoors.
