Saffron Bulbs

We recommend planting them by the end of September in northern Italy; in central and southern Italy, planting can continue until the end of October.

Bulb circumference 10/+ cm;

The importance of choosing bulbs with a circumference of more than 10 cm compared to bulbs measuring 7/8 cm is that in the first year, each bulb can produce two flowers; from the second year, flower production can reach up to three to four per bulb.

When the bulbs arrive, it's crucial to plant them at the right time. Typically, the best time to plant them is in late summer or early fall, so they have time to develop before the first frosts. Make sure to plant them at an adequate depth and give them enough space to grow and spread. Remember to water the bulbs adequately during the growing season.

Regarding soil, saffron bulbs prefer well-drained soil, rich in organic matter, and with a neutral pH. You can improve the soil quality by adding compost or organic fertilizer before planting. If your soil is clayey or heavy, make sure to create good drainage to avoid waterlogging.

During the flowering period, it's important to harvest the saffron flowers at the right time. The flowers should open fully and reveal their delicate orange or red stamens. Use scissors to gently cut the flowers at the base, being careful not to damage the bulbs underneath. You can then harvest the stamens, which make up the precious saffron. For the best aroma and flavor, dry the stamens immediately after harvesting.
