Daffodil bulbs (Narcissus spp.) are among the most popular spring flowers for their elegant beauty and their extraordinary ability to bloom again every year with little care. Here are some essential tips for properly growing daffodil bulbs, both in the garden and in pots.

When to plant daffodil bulbs

The ideal time to plant daffodil bulbs is autumn, between September and December, before the ground freezes. This allows the bulb to root well during the winter and prepare for spring flowering.

Where and how to plant daffodils

  • Location: Choose a sunny or partially shaded area with at least 4–6 hours of light a day.
  • Ideal soil: Well-drained, light, and enriched with organic matter (such as compost or well-rotted manure).
  • Planting Depth: Plant bulbs at a depth of 3 times the bulb's height (average 10–15 cm), with the tip pointing upwards.
  • Spacing: Leave 10–15 cm between bulbs to allow for optimal development.

Watering Narcissus Bulbs

After planting, water lightly to encourage rooting. During the growing season, keep the soil just moist, avoiding waterlogging, which can cause rot.

Post-flowering care: how to keep bulbs healthy

After spring flowering, do not immediately cut the leaves. Let them yellow and dry naturally for at least 6 weeks: this allows the bulbs to build up nutrient reserves for the following year's flowering.

Winter Protection

In areas subject to very harsh winters or deep frosts, apply a layer of mulch (dry leaves, straw, or bark) to protect the bulbs from excessive cold. Alternatively, you can plant the bulbs in pots and shelter them in a cool but frost-free location.
