Botanical description

Chimonanthus praecox, commonly known as Winter calycanthus, is a medium-sized deciduous shrub grown for its extremely fragrant winter flowers. The plant reaches an average height of 2–4 meters, with an erect habit and dense, irregular branching.

The waxy, translucent flowers appear on bare branches between December and February, heralding the spring vegetation. The corolla is pale yellow with a purple center. The sweet, intense scent permeates the cold air of the winter months.

Cultivation and care

  • Location: It prefers full sun, but also adapts to partial shade. A sunny position stimulates more abundant flowering.
  • Soil: It prefers fertile, deep, and well-drained soil, with a neutral or sub-alkaline pH. It tolerates waterlogging.
  • Watering: Moderate. Once well established, it is drought-resistant. It requires regular watering only in summer and during prolonged periods without rain.
  • Pruning: After flowering, remove old or poorly positioned branches. Do not prune drastically, as the flowers form on the previous year's branches.
  • Hardy: Very hardy, it withstands temperatures down to -15/-18°C, perfect for temperate and continental climates.

  • Period: December to February
  • Color: Light yellow with purple spots
  • Fragrance: Intense, sweet, and persistent
  • Ornamental interest: Highly valued in winter gardens and for cutting
