Botanical description

Caryopteris × clandonensis ‘Grand Blue’ is a deciduous, compact, and tufted shrub, prized for its abundant late flowering and the intense blue color of its flowers, which are highly attractive to bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. The habit is rounded and tidy, ideal for mixed borders, flowerbeds, and dry gardens.

The leaves are opposite, lanceolate, grayish green, and slightly aromatic. The flowers appear in dense terminal clusters, from August to October, sapphire blue on purple stems.

Cultivation and care

  • Location: It loves full sun, which enhances flowering and the plant's compactness.
  • Soil: It prefers well-drained soils, even poor ones, slightly calcareous or sandy. It tolerates waterlogging.
  • Watering: Drought-resistant once well-established. Water moderately during prolonged dry periods.
  • Pruning: At the end of winter, a sharp cut to 10–20 cm from the ground is recommended to stimulate new flowering growth.
  • Hardy: It tolerates cold well (down to -15°C), but tolerates winter waterlogging in overly humid climates.

Flowering and Ornamental Interest

It blooms from late summer to late autumn (August–October), a period by which many other plants have already completed their flowering cycle. The contrast between the deep blue flowers and the silvery foliage gives the plant a high decorative value.

Landscape uses

  • Mixed flowerbeds and perennial borders
  • Rock gardens, Mediterranean gardens, or low-maintenance gardens
  • Excellent as a single specimen or in a group
  • Also suitable for large, well-drained pots, on sunny terraces
