Description
Dogwood Durability and Resilience
The fruit-bearing dogwood (Cornus mas) stands out as one of the few fruit trees characterized by extraordinary longevity. Some plants can reach 100-200 years, continuing to produce abundant fruit. A dogwood plantation, although requiring initial care, can generate income for generations.
Soil Conditions for Cultivation
The dogwood is a plant that is undemanding regarding soil type, but does not tolerate flooded, acidic, or saline soils. The ideal soil should be fertile and well-drained, with a neutral or basic pH (7-8) and a high calcium content. In acidic soils, it is possible to quickly deacidify them using lime.
Maintenance and Irrigation
Dogwood plants require little specific care. During dry periods during the growing season, irrigation is essential, as the quantity and quality of the harvest depend on the presence of moisture.
Choosing a Location and Mulching
It is recommended to plant dogwoods in full sun in northern Italy and in central and southern Italy, in areas that are not too sunny. Yield can be improved by mulching the plants with organic materials, which also limits weed growth.
Spacing Between Plants
Planting spacing depends on the practicality of the harvest and the fertility of the soil. Plants should be planted in rows 4-5 meters apart, with a minimum distance of 2-2.5 meters between plants. This promotes greater productivity per unit area in the initial years.
Pruning Techniques
It is recommended to prune plants to a height of 50-70 cm, keeping the shoots above the graft point. Regular pruning will help improve the quality and weight of the fruit.
Transplant Sensitivity
The fruit-bearing dogwood does not like transplanting, especially older plants. It is advisable to plant young plants with soil clods to preserve the existing mycorrhizal symbiosis.
Dogwood Varieties
The presence of different varieties in the plantation is essential for good fruiting.
