Ornamental plant belonging to the Asteraceae or Compositae family, like chrysanthemum, daisy, marigold, dandelion, sunflower, and many others. There are at least 50 varieties. It can be short or tall, annual or perennial, and in any case, it is always a plant that loves the heat; at our temperatures, it cannot withstand winter. It is very sensitive to waterlogging and humidity. Visually, it is immediately recognizable by the warm, vibrant colors of its flowers, ranging from carmine red to yellow, through all shades of orange. Besides being a beautiful ornamental plant for flowerbeds and planters, it is particularly appreciated for its antiparasitic, antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. It emits a distinctive odor that annoys and repels many harmful insects, while also attracting bees and other pollinators. Its roots produce root exudates that, when released into the soil, kill nematodes, worms that cause the decline of various plants. It also inhibits weed growth. Herbalists use its essential oil (Tagetes minuta), while in horticulture it is planted directly in the garden as an intercrop with other plants, especially tomatoes.
