Family: Theaceae

Origin: East Asia (China, Japan, India)

Botanical description

The white-flowered Camellia sinensis is a evergreen perennial belonging to the Theaceae family, famous for being the species from which the green, black, white, and oolong tea leaves are obtained. In addition to its agricultural value, it also stands out for its high ornamental value, thanks to its delicate white flowers with golden stamens, which bloom in autumn-winter.

It appears as a compact shrub, well-branched, with leathery, shiny, serrated leaves of a bright green. When mature, it can reach 1.5 – 2 meters in height, making it ideal for both open ground and potted cultivation.

Cultivation and maintenance

  • Location: It loves partial shade, but can also tolerate direct sun in cool, humid climates.
  • Soil: It prefers an acidic substrate (pH 5.5 – 6.5), well-drained and rich in humus. Soil for acid-loving plants is excellent.
  • Irrigation: It requires regular watering, avoiding waterlogging. Use low-limestone water.
  • Fertilization: Use specific fertilizers for acid-loving plants from March to September, every 3-4 weeks.
  • Pruning: Perform containment pruning in late winter or after flowering to stimulate new shoots.
  • Hardy: It is moderately hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -8/-10°C if well mulched. In cold areas, it is recommended to grow it in a pot, which should be covered in winter.

Flowering and Harvest

Flowering occurs between October and December, with fragrant white flowers that attract pollinating insects. The young leaves, if harvested correctly, can be dried and used to prepare homemade tea.

Uses

  • Cultivation for herbal or food use (tea leaf production)
  • Ornamental plant for gardens or terraces
  • Ideal for thematic and oriental gardens
  • Perfect for creating low, informal hedges
