Description
Description
Scientific name: Zantedeschia aethiopica L.
Common name: Giant Calla Lily
Family: Araceae
Origin: South Africa
Botanical description
Giant Calla Lily, known scientifically as Zantedeschia aethiopica, is a perennial, rhizomatous herbaceous plant belonging to the Araceae family. It is distinguished by its large, white spathe-like inflorescences and its deep, glossy, arrow-shaped leaves. The spathe, often mistaken for a petal, envelops the bright yellow central spadix.
This variety is characterized by an erect and vigorous growth habit, reaching heights between 70 and 200 cm, making it ideal for both flowering borders and for growing in pots or planters indoors and outdoors.
Cultivation and care
- Location: It prefers sunny or partial shade locations, avoiding direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.
- Soil: It requires a rich, fresh, and well-drained soil. It's best to use a universal potting soil with the addition of peat and sand to improve drainage.
- Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during the growing season (spring-summer). In winter, when grown in open ground, it tolerates short periods of drought but is sensitive to waterlogging.
- Fertilizer: We recommend using a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during flowering to ensure intense colors and long-lasting flowers.
- Hardy: It is a moderately hardy plant (it can withstand temperatures down to about -5/-7°C), but in particularly cold climates, it is best to grow it in a pot and bring it in during the winter months.
Flowering
Giant Calla Lily flowers typically occur from April to September, depending on the weather conditions. The elegant and long-lasting flowers are also perfect for cutting and floral arrangements.
Uses
- Ornamental gardens
- Potted plants for terraces and balconies
- Cut flowers for decorations and ceremonies
- Designing water gardens or wetlands, thanks to its good humidity tolerance.
