SELF-FERTILE VARIETY

It is a woody, deciduous climber that reaches lengths of up to 8-10 meters in its native areas. The fruits are red, oval, and soft berries, grouped in clusters that are deep red when ripe. The flavor is a blend of the basic flavors of sour, sweet, salty, spicy, and bitter. Its Chinese name, wu-wei-zi, means "fruit of five flavors." Ripens around September-October. It is a species adaptable to difficult climatic conditions, being able to withstand temperatures down to about -17°C. A fundamental herb in Chinese medicine, schisandra has health benefits: it is adaptogenic, improves brain function, is immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and liver-protective.

Nutritional and beneficial properties

 

The fruits, along with the leaves and bark, contain schisandrin, a toning and strengthening substance, as well as vitamin E and precious minerals such as iron, copper, manganese, nickel, molybdenum, titanium, zinc, as well as magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus.

Schisandra berries are known for their stimulating and invigorating effects on the nervous and respiratory systems, and are traditionally used against physical fatigue and mental, exhaustion, anemia, liver and digestive disorders, and vision problems.
