Yam plant is a climbing plant and can reach a height of about 3 m. The flowers are small, white-green-yellow with a pleasant scent of cinnamon and bloom in summer. The leaves are deep green. In late summer and autumn, the bulbils appear on the plant and have a size of a pea or a hazelnut. They can be used for propagation or can be eaten - they hav ae tasty nutty flavor.
The Yam requires exposure in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Tolerates frost down to -20 ° C.

It can grow on a variety of media, such as poles or pylons. In the garden plant it is possible to sow it very near to eachother (also only at intervals of 25 cm), in that the bulbs are formed vertically deep under the plant. To extract the tubers, you have to dig deep holes. For this reason many prefer the cultivation in high boxes, as to favor the collection. It is advisable to collect the second year after planting, when the tuber is well developed. The tubers are able to reach even 50 cm in length (in very favorable conditions can grow up to 1 m) and weigh up to 1 kg (max. 2 kg). Pleasantly scented and flavored with nutty flavor, they are much tastier potatoes. As for the potatoes, it would be good to consume cooked (boiled, baked, fried) and add them to a variety of dishes, including soups and salads.
The tubers must be harvested at the end of the second year of cultivation. They can be stored in a cool (but frost) for several months. During this period they should be protected from drying out.
The Yam can be propagated from bulbils (collected in autumn after ripening, but before falling) or cutting the top of the tubers where there are dormant buds. In the spring they can be planted in pots or directly in the ground when the period of frost is over.
